14-Year-Old Student Arrested in Dallas After Lavon Shooting

A 14-year-old middle-school student has been taken into custody in Dallas following a weekend shooting in Lavon that left a 24-year-old man dead.

The Shooting

On Saturday at about 8:50 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Wellington Drive in the Crestridge Meadows neighborhood. A witness reported that a man was shot after an altercation between two people. Police confirmed that 24-year-old Romeo English of Rowlett suffered several gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead.

Suspect’s Capture

Lavon Police announced late Monday night that the juvenile suspect was apprehended in Dallas without incident. No additional details were released. The suspect had left the party before police arrived.

Police Statements and Community Response

Chief J. Michael Jones said, “It’s very concerning. We certainly know a basic level of what happened, but what I would say to the suspect and anybody that might be harboring the suspect or aiding him in his flight – first off, turn him in. Turn him in right away. Bring him in so we can talk to him and let him tell his side of the story.” He told NBC 5 that officers were following leads and visiting places tied to the suspect, but had credible evidence that he left town.

Law Enforcement Collaboration

After the arrest, Lavon Police thanked partners such as the Collin County District Attorney’s Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety, Louisiana State Police, sheriff’s offices in Collin County, Dallas County and Bossier Parish, and police departments in Shreveport, Wylie, Josephine and the Community ISD.

School Precautions and Public Appeal

On Sunday, Community ISD sent a letter to parents stating the suspect is a student of Community Trails Middle School. The district will close three campuses-Community Trails Middle School, Dodson Elementary School, and NeSmith Elementary School-to visitors until an arrest is made. The letter noted the suspect has not been on campus since Nov. 11, and police believe the Saturday shooting was a targeted act with no threat to school campuses. Each campus will have increased security and the existing armed CISD police officer.

Lavon Police is asking the public to submit any information or video that may aid the investigation. Anonymous tips can be sent with the keyword LAVONPD to 847411.
