Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were found dead in their Brentwood home on Sunday, with their son Nick arrested for the alleged homicide.
Investigation
The 78‑year‑old director and his 68‑year‑old wife were discovered with stab wounds on the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue in Brentwood around 3:40 p.m. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Los Angeles Police Department said family members would be interviewed as part of the homicide investigation. On Monday morning, LAPD confirmed that Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested late Sunday night and booked.
Family Arrest
“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the Reiners,” Police Chief Jim McDonnell told reporters on Monday. “It’s a tragic incident.”
Police have not released details regarding the deaths. TMZ reported that the couple ‘had their throats slit by a family member, possibly after an argument’ before Nick Reiner’s arrest was confirmed.
Legacy of Rob Reiner
Rob Reiner, the son of comedian Carl Reiner, rose to fame in the early 1970s playing Michael “Meathead” Stivic in Norman Lear’s ‘All in the Family.’ He later directed classics such as ‘When Harry Met Sally’ and ‘A Few Good Men.’
Reiner also explored his personal struggles in the semi‑autobiographical 2016 film ‘Being Charlie,’ which chronicled his and his father’s difficult relationship and his addiction battles.
Statements from Family and Officials
“Norman often referred to Rob as a son, and their close relationship was extraordinary, to us and the world,” said a Lear family statement. “Norman would have wanted to remind us that Rob and Michele spent every breath trying to make this country a better place, and they pursued that through their art, their activism, their philanthropy, and their love for family and friends.”
“Personally, I am heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob and his wife Michele. I knew Rob and have tremendous respect for him. Among his numerous contributions, Rob helped create First 5 California, a landmark initiative funded by a tobacco tax to support early childhood development programs. He and Michele fought for early childhood development and marriage equality, working to overturn Proposition 8. They were true champions for LGBTQ+ rights.”
