Burglars Hit Biffle Home After Fatal Crash

Burglars broke into the Mooresville, North Carolina, home of Greg Biffle less than a month after the retired NASCAR driver and six others died in a December 18 plane crash, stealing $30,000 in cash, guns, and racing memorabilia.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office listed the incident as “forcible entry” and “burglary” in a report filed January 8. Sheriff Darren Campbell said investigators believe the intruders targeted a safe inside the residence. In addition to the cash, a backpack noted in the report was reported stolen, and Campbell confirmed that several firearms and pieces of memorabilia are also missing.

Campbell emphasized that no one was home during the break-in. Detectives have conducted interviews and are awaiting results from digital evidence analysis.

“We’re working the case. We are waiting on some digital evidence,” Campbell said.

The December Crash

The burglary follows the December 18 crash of a Cessna C550 business jet that had departed Statesville Regional Airport only minutes earlier. Biffle, his wife, their two children, and three other passengers were on board. The aircraft attempted to return to the airport but went down short of the runway, erupting in a large fire. All seven people died.

Federal investigators have not released a cause. Biffle, who tallied 19 NASCAR Cup Series victories during his career, held a pilot’s license, as did two other passengers, leaving uncertainty about who was at the controls.

Memorial Service Set

A public memorial honoring Biffle and the six other victims is scheduled for Friday morning at a Charlotte arena.
