Slack Unveils AI Agent That Reads Your Chats

At a Glance

  • Slackbot is now a native AI agent that drafts emails, schedules events, and pulls data from your workspace
  • It integrates with Microsoft Teams and Google Drive, letting users work across apps without leaving Slack
  • Permissions mirror your own access, but admin visibility into DMs is not addressed
  • Why it matters: Every Business+ and Enterprise+ customer now has an AI coworker that learns from every message and file

Slack users are getting a built-in AI coworker they can’t avoid. On Tuesday, Salesforce announced it is transforming Slackbot from a simple command tool into a full AI agent that studies your chats, files, and calendar to tailor itself to your workflow.

From Simple Bot to AI Agent

Slackbot’s upgrade is being pitched as friction-free productivity. “Slackbot is your deeply personal AI agent for work, built natively into Slack for every employee, with no setup or training required,” the company said in a blog post. “What makes it different is simple: Slackbot starts with your context. And that context is what’s missing from the other tools out there.”

The agent can:

  • Draft emails in your tone
  • Surface events from your calendar
  • Retrieve information from any channel or DM you can access
  • Connect to third-party apps

Cross-Platform Powers

Slack admits most real work happens outside its walls, so the new Slackbot plugs into Microsoft Teams and Google Drive. These integrations let users create, edit, and share files across platforms without switching windows. The goal is to keep communication and action inside one interface.

What It Sees-and What It Doesn’t Say

Slackbot’s memory is your workspace. “It is informed by your messages and files,” Slack states, “but it sees only what you can see, always respecting the permissions already in place.” The company does not clarify whether administrators-who can already export direct messages under some plans-gain any additional visibility through the AI.

Multi-Agent Future

Salesforce hints that Slackbot will soon coordinate with other AI agents, including its own Agentforce platform. Users could, in theory, assign complex projects that bounce between specialized agents while receiving updates through a single Slack thread. Harvard Business Review research notes AI agents currently excel at internal processes over customer-facing tasks, suggesting Slackbot may handle back-office workflows first.

Rollout Details

The upgraded Slackbot is live today for most Business+ and Enterprise+ tiers. There is no word on when or whether free or Pro plans will receive the feature.
